14. Crush the Digestive biscuits.

Adam was out at the men’s meeting, Naomi was video messaging her friends about some group event happening soon, and Flora had taken the opportunity to have a deep bubble bath, complete with green face mask and hair oil.

“You look like Shrek,” her daughter had giggled as Flora passed her open bedroom door on the way downstairs, still wearing just a towel as she’d left the new skin oil that had arrived that day in the kitchen and now needed to trudge down to get it.

“Sexy beast! She’s a keeper!” Reggie added, his head cocked in interest from where he sat on Naomi’s bed.

Flora wondered for a moment if he thought she had developed green feathers like him and was chuckling to herself as she entered the kitchen. Her mirth was short-lived however, as one glance through the large back window, expecting to see the rose garden and back lawns in their autumn plumage, and Flora was confronted by a sight even scarier than her own visage.

A man, peering through the kitchen window, bold as brass and not even trying to conceal his face with a balaclava or anything. Not that that would’ve been better.

“Agh!” Flora screamed, alerting the pair upstairs who she could then hear charging down the staircase to rescue her.

“Agh!” The trespasser shouted back, clearly as disturbed by Flora’s face as she was at finding him there.

“Stay here Mum, we’ll get him,” Naomi raced through the kitchen in her dalmatian onesie, Reggie flying above her head, and paused only briefly to unlock the back door.

“No, leave it to…” Flora began, but her daughter was already out the door and chasing the intruder down. She hurried after them in her pink, fluffy slippers, wishing her offspring – both of them – weren’t quite so headstrong.

Shrieks of “Get out of it! Stupid jerk! The fool has arrived!” could be heard in combination with the high voice of the teenager. In the end, it was the bird who got the kill, so to speak, as he landed on the man’s head, digging in with his talons and pecking at his scalp causing the intruder to fall to his knees as he tried to grab the determined parrot.

By then, Naomi and Flora had both caught up, the latter rather more out of breath than she’d like to admit. They had all reached the front of the house now, and Naomi had already started calling Adam on speed dial – thank goodness for teenagers and having their devices permanently attached to their being, Flora thought as she tried half-heartedly to encourage her feisty feathered friend off the man’s head.

Her quick call with Adam finished, Naomi then turned her attention to the man who had now stood up and was being verbally assaulted by the bird who still had his head in a vice-like grip.

“I’m recording you,” the teenager said, holding her phone up, “so don’t be thinking you can get away now. We have evidence.” Flora couldn’t have been more proud of her resourceful daughter.
